Winter Workouts

How's your packing coming along? Learn these useful phrases for preparing and getting things done.

Key Expressions

1. Tie up loose ends
To tend to small details before something is completed. You can think of this as neatly finishing off the minor remaining parts of a task, much like dealing with the unraveled ends of a thread or rope.
This phrase carries the feeling of ensuring nothing is forgotten so that a project or event won't metaphorically "unravel" later. It is highly common in business and administrative contexts when finalizing contracts, responding to last-minute emails, or organizing logistics right before a major deadline or taking time off.
  • A: Is your report done? B: Almost. Just tying up loose ends.
  • The project is done, but we still have a few loose ends to tie up.
  • Before I can leave for the weekend, I have a few loose ends to tie up at the office.
  • The detectives are interviewing one last witness to tie up loose ends in the case before they close it.
2. Have something lined up
To have something planned, arranged, or scheduled already. This phrase uses the imagery of standing things in a line to express that future tasks, jobs, or plans are prepared in advance without any empty gaps.
"Lined up" implies a smooth, organized transition. When you finish one task or phase of life, the next one is literally "next in line" waiting for you. Using this phrase shows foresight, organization, and a proactive attitude. It is perfect for describing upcoming events like a new job, an interview, a next project, or continuous weekend plans.
  • A: Do you have an apartment for next year? B: Yeah, it's already lined up.
  • He already has a job lined up after graduation.
  • He quit his job but already has another one lined up.
  • We have a fantastic guest speaker lined up for next week's university seminar.
  • Do you have any fun activities lined up for the summer holidays?
3. Be all set
To be completely ready. This phrase describes a state where preparations are fully finished and is actually used more frequently in daily life than the simple word "ready".
"Set" implies being firmly fixed in place or established. "All set" is extremely versatile. Aside from meaning "fully prepared," native speakers often use it to politely decline something (e.g., "Would you like a bag?" -> "No thanks, I'm all set") or to indicate a transaction is successfully completed (e.g., "Just sign here, and you're all set").
  • A: Do you still need time to get ready? B: Nope, I'm all set.
  • She studied every night this week, and was all set for the test.
  • I've packed my bags and printed my boarding pass, so I'm all set for the flight.
  • Once you pay the registration fee, you'll be all set to join the class.

Power Pattern

It sounds like you're ready...
Used to demonstrate active empathy and listening by reflecting back what the other person has told you.
Using "It sounds like" is an excellent conversational tool. It softens the phrase, making it a supportive observation rather than a direct assumption. You can follow it with a noun phrase ("ready for [noun]") or an action ("ready to [verb]").
  • It sounds like you're ready for more responsibility.
  • It sounds like you're ready to settle down and get married.
  • It sounds like you're ready to go to bed, Luna.
  • It sounds like you're ready to take on a management position at work.
  • It sounds like you're ready for a long vacation after surviving that busy semester.

Power Vocab

Progressing
In progress, or showing progress.
Derived from the noun "progress," this continuous verb implies steady, forward movement toward a goal. It is slightly more formal than saying things are "going well" and is frequently used in academic, medical, or professional updates to reassure someone that positive development is happening over time.
  • The construction on the new campus library is progressing right on schedule.
  • Her language skills are progressing quickly since she started studying abroad.
