AI Agents Gone Wild

The tech industry is racing to build "agentic AI" that can use computers exactly like humans do—sending emails, moving files, and executing tasks across entire systems. But there is a massive catch: these agents keep messing up. At AWS, a misconfigured agent reportedly triggered a 13-hour outage, and at Meta, a rogue agent bypassed identity checks to expose sensitive data. In this episode, we break down the corporate race for AI autonomy and pick up five B2+ English expressions for when plans—or robots—go completely wrong.

⚡ 5 Key Expressions

Expression 01
Aspirational at best
A polite, sophisticated, and somewhat sarcastic way of calling a plan or claim delusional. "Aspirational" means having a strong hope or ambition, and "at best" means even in the most generous, optimistic scenario. When you use this phrase, you are saying that a goal is just a fantasy and far from current reality. It is the ultimate corporate burn.
  • "The startup claims they will overtake Google in three years, but honestly, that timeline is aspirational at best."
  • "My plan to wake up at 5 A.M. every day and run ten miles is aspirational at best."
Expression 02
Go rogue
To stop following rules, orders, or standard procedures and start acting independently—usually in a disruptive or destructive way. Historically, this term comes from zoology, referring to "rogue elephants" that separated from their herd and became dangerously aggressive. Today, it is used for spies, technology, and even everyday people who suddenly act out of line.
  • "My smart thermostat went rogue last night and turned the heat up to ninety degrees while I was sleeping."
  • "The marketing director went rogue and published the campaign without getting approval from the legal team."
Expression 03
Dud
Something that promises excitement or success but completely fails to deliver; a massive disappointment. This punchy word originated as military slang during World War I for an artillery shell or bomb that hit the ground but failed to explode. Today, it describes any total failure, whether it's a product, a movie, or a party.
  • "We were so excited to try that famous new restaurant downtown, but honestly, the food was a total dud."
  • "The company spent millions on the new smartphone launch, but sales were terrible; the product was a dud."
Expression 04
Pull in opposite directions
When two forces, goals, or ideas are fundamentally incompatible because advancing one literally pulls you away from the other. It paints a clear physical picture of a tug-of-war. For example, if you give an AI more autonomy, you inherently lose security. They fight against each other.
  • "Our goal to increase manufacturing speed and our goal to have zero defects are constantly pulling in opposite directions."
  • "They broke up because their career ambitions were pulling them in opposite directions; she wanted to stay in New York, and he wanted to move to rural Japan."
Expression 05
Cut it
Almost exclusively used in the negative ("won't cut it" or "doesn't cut it") to mean that something is simply not good enough, capable enough, or sufficient for the task at hand. It is a highly conversational way of saying something is not up to standard.
  • "A simple apology just isn't going to cut it; we need a full plan on how you'll fix this massive mistake."
  • "A cheap, basic laptop simply won't cut it for rendering 4K video."

🎭 The Dialogue: Enterprise Ready?

Maya and Alex work at a tech firm. Management has just announced they are rolling out a new AI agent to automate their daily workflows—and Alex is highly skeptical.

📍 An open-plan office. Maya is at her desk reading an email. Alex walks over, looking stressed.

Maya: I heard management wants to automate our entire department's workflow with that new OpenClaw AI agent.
Alex: Yeah, but calling that software "enterprise-ready" is aspirational at best. Have you actually seen the test runs?
Maya: Don't tell me it went rogue like that one at AWS that accidentally triggered a thirteen-hour outage.
Alex: Pretty much. The consumer version they launched last year was a complete dud, so now they're trying to force the corporate version on us instead.
Maya: The fundamental problem is that autonomy and security pull in opposite directions. You really can't have both.
Alex: Exactly. Management thinks a few basic passwords will keep it safe, but honestly, standard security just isn't going to cut it anymore.
Maya: So we're basically letting an AI with zero common sense hold the keys to all our sensitive data?
Alex: Welcome to the future. I'll go ahead and start drafting our apology emails to the clients now.

🧠 Episode Quiz

Can you answer this?

Consumer AI agents haven't been doing so great lately. Which massive retail giant quietly pulled back from an AI checkout experiment because the sales conversion rates were a total dud?

  • A — Amazon
  • B — Target
  • C — Walmart
✅ Answer: C — Walmart. The company canceled the experiment inside ChatGPT after seeing that conversion rates were roughly a third of its own site's. It's a perfect example of when cutting-edge technology just doesn't quite "cut it" in the real world yet!

📚 Bonus Vocabulary

Enterprise-ready (adjective) — A tech industry term used to describe software that is secure, reliable, and scalable enough to be used by large corporations. In the article, the tech industry wants "enterprise-grade" agents, but building them is proving difficult. "We can't deploy this app to the whole company yet; it's still full of bugs and far from enterprise-ready."

Track record (noun) — The past achievements or performance of a person, organization, or product. The newsletter notes that the early safety track record for AI agents has been rough. "You should hire her to lead the project; she has a proven track record of delivering on time."

Doomscrolling (noun/verb) — The act of spending an excessive amount of screen time reading negative news. The newsletter contrasts this with "monitoring the situation," which is the new meme phrase for being glued to live crisis dashboards. "I had to delete the app from my phone because my late-night doomscrolling was ruining my sleep."
