Are You “Voicepilled”?

There is a new contender for the most annoying office behavior: the colleague talking to their AI assistant all day. Silicon Valley offices are starting to sound like high-end call centers as workers ditch keyboards for dictation apps in what’s being called the "voicepilled" era. In this episode, we break down this hilarious (and slightly stressful) trend and pick up five expressions you'll use far beyond the workplace.

⚡ 5 Key Expressions

Expression 01
Sweet nothings
Romantic, affectionate words whispered to a partner. While it is usually used literally for couples, in our dialogue Maya uses it sarcastically. Her coworker is talking to his phone so softly and constantly that it looks like he’s whispering romantic secrets to it, rather than just doing his job.
  • "They were sitting in the back of the cafe, whispering sweet nothings to each other."
  • "My cat only comes to me when I whisper sweet nothings to him about tuna."
Expression 02
Stream-of-consciousness
A continuous flow of unedited thoughts. It comes from literature, but in everyday speech, it’s used to describe saying or writing exactly what pops into your head without pausing to organize it first. It is the opposite of being structured or planned.
  • "Sorry for the stream-of-consciousness email, I just wanted to get all my ideas down quickly."
  • "Her presentation wasn't really planned; it was just a twenty-minute stream-of-consciousness."
Expression 03
A flex
Something you do or possess to impress others. A very popular slang noun derived from flexing your muscles to show how strong you are. It is widely used in casual conversation to talk about a point of pride or a cool skill (like being a fast typist).
  • "Showing up to the meeting with a fully completed spreadsheet was a huge flex."
  • "I haven't slept in three days." "Weird flex, but okay."
Expression 04
Ditch
To get rid of something or leave it behind because you don't want or need it anymore. This is a casual but highly useful alternative to words like "abandon" or "discard." You can ditch an old car, ditch a bad habit, or even ditch a boring party.
  • "I think it's time to ditch this marketing strategy; it's just not working."
  • "We ditched the movie halfway through because it was so boring."
Expression 05
Eavesdrop
To secretly listen to a conversation you aren't supposed to hear. Originally, it meant standing under the "eaves" (the edge of a roof) to listen to people inside a house. Note the preposition: you usually say you eavesdrop on someone or something.
  • "I couldn't help but eavesdrop on the couple arguing at the next table."
  • "Make sure you shut the door; we don't want anyone to eavesdrop on our strategy meeting."

🎭 The Dialogue: The "Voicepilled" Coworker

Maya and Alex share an open-plan office. They are trying to get some work done, but their coworker Eric has been pacing around his desk, talking to his phone for the last hour.

📍 An open-plan office, Tuesday morning. Maya looks up from her laptop, visibly annoyed.

Maya: I can't take it anymore, Alex. Eric has been mumbling sweet nothings to his AI all morning.
Alex: Tell me about it. I feel like I'm working in a high-end call center.
Maya: He just paces around doing this weird stream-of-consciousness rambling. It's so distracting.
Alex: Right? Being able to type one hundred and fifty words per minute used to be such a flex.
Maya: Now everyone just wants to ditch their keyboards and talk to their screens.
Alex: Honestly, all this AI eavesdropping is making me nervous. Does it hear our conversations too?
Maya: Probably. I think a good pair of noise-canceling headphones is a job requirement now.
Alex: Yeah, I'm buying some tonight. I actually miss the sound of people just typing.

🧠 Episode Quiz

Can you answer this?

LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman recently coined a specific term for this new era where people use dictation apps to turn their rambling into AI prompts. What is the term?

  • A — Screen-talking
  • B — Voicepilled
  • C — Prompt-babbling
✅ Answer: B — Voicepilled. Adding "-pilled" to the end of a word is a very popular internet slang structure right now to show that someone has completely embraced a new mindset or lifestyle. So being "voicepilled" means you've fully committed to talking to your tech instead of typing.
